Let’s just get the basics out of the way. Atomic Object offers compensation consistent with other area software employers. But it’s all the things beyond this that make AO the kind of place you want to work…

We work in one big room and discourage the use of headphones since the developer two seats over will inevitably overhear your problem and offer a solution. ”Cubicle” is a dirty word. We have open, non-assigned work areas complemented by personal storage; sit down where you like to get your work done. While we’re pragmatic about pairing, it’s not okay to not want to pair. Some of our projects are on-site with our customers; most are in the office. Bug tracking software is one tool we don’t seem to use or discuss much – we just don’t have that many bugs to track. Tours of duty share the pain on projects with less than ideal circumstances. We carefully plan assignments to help people grow as developers. A diverse client base means diversity in technology and problem domain. Atoms are encouraged and funded to attend conferences. Atoms regularly publish papers & articles and speak on the art of software development. The phrase “that can’t be tested” is either a dare or fighting words. We all make a conscious effort to get better and help everyone else get better too. If something makes sense, we do it, change it, or try it. Communal snacking is a way of life. There is profit sharing. Laptop purchases are subsidized. If you work at AO, you work with the cream of the crop. Non-sustainable pace (i.e. regular instances of overtime) is vigorously discouraged. Biking or walking to work is normal. Using or contributing to Open Source Software is considered virtuous. Lots of discussion of policies is regular; policies are few; politics is almost non-existent. Openness is the only way to go. We have a great reputation, and interesting work always seems to find us.
