iPhone-Integrated New Product Development
Proof-of-Concept. Hard Deadline. Small Budget. Hush Hush.
Challenge
A product development company and supplier in the XXXXXXXXX market conceived of an innovative control system concept to be unveiled at an industry show. Time was short. The budget was set. And, the particulars of interfacing an iPhone/iPod with the larger system were unknown.
Background
XXXXXXX saw the pervasiveness and power of portable smart devices as a means to create innovative new control interfaces. The hardware partner for XXXXXXX’s new product concept recommended Atomic Object to implement the custom iPhone/iPod application.
Project Overview
XXXXXXX came to AO for a custom iPhone/iPod application needed by a hard deadline.

A Control System That’s Brainy and Beautiful
The appeal of XXXXXXX’s product concept was twofold. First, using the iPhone/iPod as a control system interface fit into XXXXXXX’s larger Green concept by XXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XX X XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX. Second, using an iPhone or iPod Touch as an interface is, let’s face it, sexy.
Most embedded control systems incur significant development expense. Further, cost pressures often prevent these systems from offering a good user experience due to a lack of processing power and a lack of a good user interface foundation. This approach solves both problems.
iSuccess
XXXXXXX had a tight, drop-dead date for an industry show. In addition, the overall budget was constrained and the concept’s finer details were yet to be worked out. We approached the project like all others—with responsible project management, good testing, iterations, and lots of communication. Custom simulators we created allowed us to system test, exercise, and develop software while system hardware was under parallel development. We used our Agile expertise to manage unknowns and deliver quality.
