Challenge

The production floor is a place where many tasks of varying complexity and consequence exist together, competing for a company’s time and resources. AGI-Goldratt Institute has helped many of its customers change their information systems and processes to manage production priorities.

Prioritizing incorrectly is costly for business because it prevents products from being delivered in a timely manner. Early deliveries typically entail storing products not yet needed and missing opportunities to deliver those that are. A missed deadline translates into (at worst) a lost customer or (at best) pouring money into overnight shipping, overtime, and other inefficiencies. Many firms have a software foundation in place but lack the features necessary to achieve breakthrough performance. Also, many firms already have a long list of IT changes scheduled or lack the funds to implement desired changes.

Keeping Your Priorities in Line

AGI set out to create an application that would complement its thought-ware solutions and leverage their customers’ existing software investments. In came the newest component of AGI’s Velocity Suite™ – MANAGE – a web-based prioritization manager that uses time buffers to improve execution management. MANAGE makes the complex simple by using data already present in the customers’ existing ERP or MRP system streamline task prioritization into a “one number priority system.” This allows firms to compare the varied tasks of production – apples to apples – and prioritize them accordingly.

Bring in the A-team

AGI brought in AO to help them execute their vision. We had worked with AGI before, but MANAGE has some unique development challenges for AO to contend with. First, AO was challenged by the inherent complexities in developing an app that works in time: time changes, time zones, and time off, to name a few. Furthermore, the initial version of MANAGE was tailored to a specific manufacturing company and was deployed weekly on a live factory floor. Our ability to deliver fully tested and functional software at each iteration gained new significance when the internal workings of a large factory depended on it. Sometimes it takes longer to feel the effects of our software’s quality, but in this case, they felt it right away.

Results

  • Our test-driven development ensured that our weekly integrations went smoothly and no data was lost or systems broken in the field.
  • MANAGE replaced an out-dated and cumbersome system. Now the customer is able to do a day’s work in an hour’s time and prioritize tasks more accurately.

Feedback

“I used to be the only person in this company who could run our scheduling systems. It was pretty convoluted, which was good for job security but horrible for our company. And it didn’t allow me to take vacations. I taught someone else to use this within four hours.”
