Case Study

ArtPrize Voting App for iPhone

Background

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, ArtPrize is a radically open art competition in which the public votes for the winner. Last year, Pomegranate Studios came to Atomic Object looking for an iPhone app that would give ArtPrize voters another—and yes, an even cooler—way to vote. The competition is now in its second year, and Atomic Object was asked to develop this voting app and expand its feature set.

Last year’s app

In addition to its core voting functionality, last year’s iPhone app featured a personal voting record, a full index of artists and their venues, and links to maps to each venue. Pom and AO were pleased with the app, created in only six weeks by two Atomic developers. We were constrained by time, but we left a four-week buffer to allow time for Apple’s notoriously strict app approval process. We received approval in just four days and were able to roll out a fully-tested, high quality app for the public to enjoy.

An app for the people.

We kicked off development this year with a period of design and discovery. We worked closely with Pom studies to create a story map of new features, taking user feedback from last year to prioritize the list of possibilities. We validated our new design solutions by conducting user interviews with prototypes. With this initial groundwork in place, we began six weeks of development.

Out of one, many (features).

Despite flying solo, Atomic Object developer Justin DeWind added an impressive list of new features to the app.

  • Quick Voting — all art pieces have a two five-digit codes (one for thumbs up,
one for down) that allow users to quickly vote from the app’s homepage by
    typing in the appropriate code.
  • Venue List — a list of all ArtPrize venues.
  • Venue Map — a zoomable, clickable map of all the ArtPrize venues in the
    downtown area.
  • Map it! — Each venue and artist page gives the option to view on a map.
  • Artist Gallery — Artists have the option to upload samples of their work.
These photos can be viewed on the artist’s bio page.
  • GeoLocation — the app utilizes geolocation technology to tell users where
they are in relation to surrounding art.
  • Social Sharing — Users can “share” art and venues with their friends
    through Facebook, Twitter, or Email.
