Cool things continue to happen in Atomic Object's neighborhood.

November 19, 2004

Grand Rapids, MI – When the Uptown Advisory Council received a $100K grant from Governor Granholm’s Cool Cities program, it included an opportunity for commercial properties located in Uptown districts to obtain a slice of this very cool pie. Businesses in these areas applied for grants, up to $4,000 each, for facade improvements. The Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce coordinated the applications and informed lucky recipients of the good news in late October, 2004.

The 88 year old building at 941 Wealthy SE is owned by Bill Bereza and Carl Erickson of Atomic Object, and Mary O’Neill of O’Neill Design. They applied for and received $3,000 in Cool Cities funding for brick repair, exterior painting and first floor awnings. Work on these projects began less than a week after receiving funding notification, and approval from the Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Commission.

“The grant gives a positive boost to the entire area,” remarked Carl Erickson, President of Atomic Object. “This funding made it possible for us to start and finish this work within the current year. Otherwise it would have been several years before it could have been completed.”

According to the project manager, Mary O’Neill, “The Cool Cities grant requirements state that facade improvement work must be completed within 90 days, so we got right on it. We’re pleased that such reputable tradespeople could fit this renovation work into their schedules.”

Masonry and brick work is being done by Westerhof Masonry. The English Painters are working the exterior painting, with their fingers crossed that the weather holds out for November 2004 completion. Awnings will be purchased from and installed by West Michigan Canvas.

Improvements to the 941 Wealthy Street building, home of Atomic Object, since it’s purchase in November, 2003 (unrelated to the Cool Cities grant) include interior demolition on the first floor, ceiling and perimeter wall insulation, new HVAC systems, electrical upgrades, a new kitchen area, improved landscaping, and a security system.

The first floor retail space is approximately 2,600 square feet and is currently for lease. The building is located in a Renaissance Zone, within the Wealthy Street Historic District.
