Mike Karlesky & Greg Williams spoke at the Embedded Systems Conference to a standing room only audience.
October 29, 2008
Boston, Massachusetts – Atoms Mike Karlesky and Greg Williams together with their colleague Mark Vander Voord (X-Rite, Inc) this week offered two very well received presentations at the Embedded Systems Conference Boston 2008.
Atomic Object began introducing Agile techniques to the embedded systems community several years ago. Interest in Agile techniques in embedded software has slowly built over time. For Atomic this interest culminated most recently in a standing room only class at ESC on Monday and a well-attended session on Wednesday.
ESC-247 & 267: ‘Agile Project Management, Or Burning Your Gantt Charts’ was a three hour class presented by Karlesky and Vander Voord introducing the concepts of Agile Project Management in an embedded systems context. Software does not map well to the manufacturing setting Gantt charts serve. To deal with changing requirements, markets, and user feedback, an Agile approach is needed. In response to the availability of this class, the room was filled to over capacity. Despite a very question-directed session more than 30 minutes were yet required to answer questions following the close of the material.
ESC-427: ‘Feature Driven Design Using TDD and Mocks’ was a ninety minute session offered by Williams and Vander Voord showcasing advanced interaction-based testing techniques for embedded software development. Interest in this session was high as so much time and effort is spent resolving flaws using traditional debugging methods in increasingly complex embedded systems. TDD results in well designed code and increased sanity in a field of shrinking budgets and shorter timelines.
Earlier this week, Karlesky, Williams, and Vander Voord also released Atomic Object’s tools for embedded Test-Driven Development.
