Carl Erickson will unveil a unique approach to a software quality assurance program.

September 29, 2004

Grand Rapids, MI – Dr. Carl Erickson, President of Atomic Object, is the featured speaker at October’s West Michigan Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). Dr. Erickson’s talk is titled “Quality Interface: definitely not your father’s QA program.”

“All too often companies will dictate that they will be quality certified through a particular standards organization by such and such a date,” Dr. Erickson explained. “Then they assign someone to head up the project and expect it to happen. But employees don’t buy in and instead return to their daily jobs, attending to the most critical issues at hand. The quality dictate is the last thing on their mind.”

In contrast to the above method that rarely accomplishes the company’s objectives, Dr. Erickson will describe his experience at Priority Health in developing an innovative software quality assurance program. Instead of a top-down-dictated alphabet soup of quality standards, this program was developed from the bottom up, by the programmers, analysts, and project managers who are on the front line of quality every day. A unique “what, not how” approach insured a uniform standard for quality projects while allowing teams the flexibility to adapt the standard to their own constraints, technologies, and situations. Priority Health has begun to see the benefit of their program and has generously agreed to share the details of this promising new approach to quality.

AITP will meet on Thursday, October 21, 2004 at Cornerstone University, 1001 East Beltline NE, in the Gainey Conference Center in the Corum Student Union. Meeting time is from 5:15 pm until 7:25 pm. To register, call (616) 336-5050 or email writer@cornerstone.edu by October 15. Cost is $25.
