Atomic Object LLC has released an open source display driver for OpenStep 4.2 running on VMWare Workstation 3.0

February 18, 2002

Grand Rapids, MI – With the development of the Atomic Object high resolution display driver, OpenStep 4.2 can be usefully run as a guest operating system of VMWare 3.0 on modern Intel-based computers. With partial funding from long-time client Valley City Linen, Atomic Object was able to develop the high resolution driver and offer it to the world under an open source license.

According to Tim Jeltema, CIO of Valley City Linen, Grand Rapids, Michigan, “Quantrix, an OpenStep spreadsheet, is still crucial to running my business; maintaining an OpenStep computer is not. Being able to tap Atomic Object’s expertise so that I can use VMWare for my spreadsheet made business sense. They brought the project in on time and budget, which I appreciated. I’m also happy that with our funding, Atomic could make it available for anyone to use.”

Atomic Object drew on their past experience in NeXTSTEP programming and expertise with Objective C for this project. “Creating object oriented NeXTSTEP display drivers are pretty simple compared to X11; it made me really miss Objective C”, said Bill Bereza, Atomic Object co-founder. “The driver worked right away when hosted on Linux. Getting the driver to work on Windows required the help of a VMWare engineer. Alex and Jeremy at VMWare were very encouraging and generous with advice,” according to Bill Bereza.

Source, installation instructions, and compiled binaries for the driver are available here.
